The Importance of the Annual Gynecological Check-up
The annual check-up is perhaps the most dreaded but also
one of the most important medical examinations.
Why is it so important?
The importance is due to the ability of pap smears to detect
precancerous conditions before they develop into cervical cancer.
The aim of a pap smear is discover atypical cells ( cells
that looks different and that have the potential to
develop into cancer). The disease process can than be
stopped very early by destroying these abnormal cells
before they cause cancer.
Cervical cancer used to be responsible for a large
percentage of cancer related deaths in worldwide. In
areas of the world where pap smears are seldom
done , it remains a very important cause of cancer related
deaths among women.
