What Is Salpingitis?

Salpingitis Made Simple

Salpingitis is an infection of the Fallopian tubes caused by bacteria. We will give basic simple information about the condition. This is only an informative site and the information provided should never be used to treat or diagnose salpingitis.

The Fallopian tubes appearance and position are discussed here . The tubes are responsible for transporting the fertilized egg cell from the ovary to the womb. The special lining covering the lumen of the tubes are discussed here .

Bacteria that gain access to the tubes, attack the tubes , causing swelling and pain. The next drawing illustrates an inflamed tube.

The bacterial attack causes tissue damage, increased blood supply and increased leakage of fluid and white blood cells ( the bodies warriors or soldiers) to the effected area. Substances that stimulate the pain nerves are also released.

The condition caused moderate to severe lower abdominal (tummy pain), severe pain during intercourse, painful body movements and the lower part of tummy is very tender. There is a real danger of permanent damage and infertility if treatment is postponed ( see infertility .

The most important part of the treatment is giving antibiotics. In severe cases the antibiotics are administrated intra venously. This is not necessary in all cases and excellent responses are achieved by oral administration. If treatment is commenced timely the tubes usually recover completely and fertility is not compromised. Neglected cases are a major cause of infertility.

The uterine cavity is sterile ( no living micro organisms present) in salpingitis. The bacteria is probably transported via the lymph vessels from the vagina to the Fallopian tubes.

The bacteria responsible for salpingitis ARE frequently ( but not always ) sexually transmitted. Chlamydia species and Neisseria gonorrhoeae ( causing gonorrhea ) are examples.
